- I think, therefore I am. Learning and cognition are one of the most central, defining characteristics of our human species. And our ability to learn and grow not only enable us to discover the world around us, but also, reflect a deep aspect of our identity. Throughout our lives, and especially in our formative years, we constantly learn. Children in particular have an innate curiosity for new things and experiences. Whether it be at home, or school, or on the job, we are wired to absorb and process new knowledge and hopefully apply it to our lives and for the benefit of society at large. In the U.S., learning environments have evolved from schoolhouses next to churches to public and private schools and university campuses.
