Manufacturing processes

- You want to know something really cool? So many of the products around us that we see, touch, and use everyday are created in factories, manufactured from raw materials into the finished goods that we're familiar with. For example, this computer mouse that I'm holding into the form that I hold here using a die from a design an engineer created where plastic was injected under high heat and pressure and formed into this shape. with numerous components on it. Those components were automatically placed by a robot called a pick-and-place machine that picks up the individual components that is determined by the engineer's drawings. This sheet metal box started off as a design on paper, then went into a design in CAD, by machine operator who determined where to bend, how to bend, and what to bend in order to create the final shape that I have in my hands. Even the screwdriver that I use to take these objects apart, this was manufactured in a factory where the shaft of the screwdriver was machined on a lathe. The handle of the screwdriver was probably in the machine that formed the final product. and all we need is either a sample or a simple piece of paper with an idea on it, to customers so we don't waste time machining things. They get to see it first, make changes, and then from that point we can start producing a die, and once we make a die we can heat treat it ourselves. Once we get okay on those prototypes we turn around and basically get a production order. We take it from the raw state and do it right from the very beginning of that concept right to the very end of the packaging process and the shipping process. where a robot might lay up the carbon fiber on a form into the shape that we want. - Most people don't even know what composites are, you know, "Oh, I teach people how and they look at me like I have 10 heads, so then I turn around and say, "All right. "I teach people how to build boats." "Oh, okay, I get it." - We also see processes that let us shape flat sheets of metal into objects like this sheet metal box. and an XYZ robot will print that design physically in plastic that exactly duplicates the design that the engineer had on the computer. - I've learned laser cutting, I've learned how to use a CNC mill of milled aluminum on the Tormach. - Today different tools like 3D printers might only be used in a prototyping context, in the future we might see 3D printers on the factory floor - I teach manual machining, CNC machining. - I teach manual machining, CNC machining. I teach blueprint reading, I teach part inspection. I teach blueprint reading, I teach part inspection. I teach CMM training, 3D printing. I teach CMM training, 3D printing. I teach classroom management. I teach classroom management. I teach life in general. I teach life in general. I teach being a good person. I teach being a good person. So, I also teach coordinate measurement machine. So, I also teach coordinate measurement machine. It utilizes a 3D model to inspect your part, It utilizes a 3D model to inspect your part, so you create a part inspection so you create a part inspection based on whatever the blueprint was called for, and then that machine will take the inspection plan and then that machine will take the inspection plan and inspect the part you just made against the perfect part. So, the model's the perfect part, your part you just made is the test part, your part you just made is the test part, and then it'll tell you how far off from perfect you are and then it'll tell you how far off from perfect you are and you're able to then go back and you're able to then go back and edit you program to meet those needs. and edit you program to meet those needs. - What's exciting about manufacturing - What's exciting about manufacturing is there are a number of different skills, is there are a number of different skills, there are a number of different tools, there are a number of different tools, and when you learn the fundamentals and when you learn the fundamentals of how these machines work you can work across of how these machines work you can work across a number of different industries with a whole wide suite a number of different industries with a whole wide suite of different tools at your disposal to create the objects that we use and see everyday. to create the objects that we use and see everyday.
