Materials and resources
- LEED credits and prerequisites under the Materials and Resources category address the environmental impact of extraction, processing, transport, maintenance, and disposal of building materials. The Materials and Resources category went through a substantial update with LEED version four that replaced single attribute credits such as recycled content and original materials with new ones that focus on a life-cycle thinking at both the building and product level. Materials and Resources category focuses on resource efficiency, life-cycle impact, performance and durability, and disclosure and transparency of building products. Resource efficiency starts with source reduction, which is all about not wasting building materials in the first place. Source reduction can be achieved by various strategies, such as careful planning, prefabrication, and designing to maximize efficiency and minimize material cut-offs.
