- You don't have to spend a lot of money to get started in storyboarding. Really, all it takes is some paper and pencils. Now, when I started storyboarding, it was all on paper, and as I did more work I made use of more tools and materials. So let's take a look at some of the materials that can help you with storyboarding. So the basic supplies are paper and pencils. Now, with pencils you generally want to at least start with a non-repro blue pencil, and what this is, it's a pencil with a very light blue lead that won't get picked up and copied on most copiers. Then you're going to want a very dark lead pencil, like this art pencil here, which is at least 2B, that's the softness of the lead. I prefer using a mechanical pencil with the 2B lead in it because their point is so small you never have to sharpen it.
