- On a set of construction drawings, we commonly see dimensions listed in feet and inches. And we often need to be able to add these together to get overall dimensions. Now, take these construction drawings that show the details on exterior walls. A simple example would be using the floor-to-floor height dimensions shown over here to calculate the overall dimension from the floor to the top of the roof. We simply add the dimension shown as 12 feet, plus 12 feet, plus 10 feet to find the overall height of 34 feet. That sounds easy, right? But what happens when the dimensions given or measured start to include both inches and feet? Now you have to keep your dimensions straight. Let's take a look at another part of this wall. What we see here are two windows on either side of a door. We're given the outside dimensions for the two windows openings and the dimension for the door opening in the middle. But if I'm trying to…
