Micrometers

- These are micrometers, or colloquially, mikes. Mikes are similar in nature to how the large jaws of calipers work by measuring the distance between two opposing faces. Mikes are also, if calibrated and done correctly, a more accurate and reliable measurement. This lower face is stationary and is called the anvil. The upper face is attached to the spindle, and this translates back and forth by rotating the thimble. Again, these are a bit more accurate than calipers because of the nature of how they work. The spindle has threads, and unless you really twerk on them, they will keep their ability to measure accurately, and because of the threads and the smooth nature in which they operate, they can measure to a tighter tolerance range. That said, here are few things you need to keep in mind. The two parallel faces need to be just that, parallel. The faces also need to be dirt-free and perfectly smooth, even a spec of dust will throw off a measurement. If you are measuring the thickness…
