- [Instructor] I cannot stress the importance to the success of a composite and not having any moisture issues. And having a good moisture detector is going to be vital when dealing with any type of moisture. Reason being is moisture, in all of its forms from condensation to puddling to ice, can get itself into your core and create issues inside the composite panel. If a cavity is filled with water and then suddenly that water gets frozen that can cause the panel to crack or de-laminate. If weight is an issue because of fuel consumption then every gallon of water that finds its way into the panel will add over eight pounds. This will reduce fuel efficiency and, depending on the aircraft, it can cause imbalances in how the aircraft flies if the water is in odd places. Also if saltwater happens to make its way into the core blocks it can cause corrosion to the core thus creating a catastrophic failure of the panel. As you…
