- [Instructor] When you feel you know enough about the trade to begin your cover letter begin with the opening paragraph. Everybody has their own personal light bulb moment when they're discovered a path that they wanted to take. Tell your story of when you realized that this was the trade for you. This will provide the interview committee with a picture of your personal reasons for wanting to enter the trade. If you're applying to a union affiliated program explain why being a union member is important to you. Telling your story helps to show that you are motivated to complete the program and contribute to the industry. Just a few questions you can ask yourself as you prepare yourself to write your opener are; what inspired you to choose this trade, what about the daily tasks appeal to you, why is the construction environment one within which you prefer to work? What is it it about the apprenticeship education process that you like? Jot down some thoughts in bullet form and then…
