- [Instructor] In the previous chapters' videos, we've discussed the components of communications and data systems that carry the signals. In this chapter, we're going to touch on some of the components that create, send and receive the signals. Most users call this type of equipment, network electronics or networking hardware. First there's a modem. A modem converts an analog sound or signal into an electronic data and vice versa. It does so usually by modulating the signal into an electronic signal. A gateway. A gateway is a piece of equipment that provides compatibility between two different types of networks by converting transmission protocols, speeds, languages and codes. Next is a router. A router directs data pieces known as packets between computers and other utilization equipment within a network.
