- [Instructor] The competitiveness of an apprenticeship program will depend on a number of factors from the region's unemployment rate and economy to the wages and benefits that the industry offers. Having little to no experience in construction may not be a barrier when applying to certain programs. Some programs are, however, more competitive and so you may wish to do some work on building your portfolio prior to applying. We will discuss some ways to acquire relatable experience, such as pre-apprenticeship programs, trade classes, personal projects, and work experience. Pre-apprenticeships provide the student with an opportunity to learn some basic construction skills and to gain some experience using tools and common building materials. They typically have a career exploration component and may include basic construction math and literacy classes. Most pre-apprenticeships are not affiliated with a specific trade, allowing the student to explore the various construction career paths available. Some industries may have their own trade-specific pre-apprenticeship. To locate a pre-apprenticeship near you, check out your local employment office, community college, or inquire at local apprenticeship training centers.
