- [Female Instructor] There are a few ways to ease into manufacturing a product a new way. The cost of 3D printing has fallen a lot in the last five years. Nowhere is that more true than in 3D printers that use a reel of plastic material as a basic feedstock, which we'll call filament-based printers. These printers range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. This makes it very inexpensive to try out the technology as far as the hardware is concerned. Like any manufacturing technology, a design that's optimal for filament-based printing may be different from what works for another technology, like injection molding. The key thing in designing a part here is to remember they'll be created one layer at a time, up from a build platform. This means that first, it needs a base that will stick to that platform.
