Protect yourself with personal protective equipment (PPE)

- [Jim] In some occupations, we hear the term PPE used quite frequently. In others, it only comes up when facing emergencies. In our personal lives, we may never even hear the term PPE until a disaster strikes, and then all of a sudden, we wished we knew more about it. PPE, or personal protective equipment, is the broad term for the things we can wear to protect us from harm. These days we actually use quite a bit of PPE without probably being consciously aware of it. That helmet that you wear when you ride your bike or your skateboard, the wrist guards and knee pads that you put on when you're going out to rollerblade, these are examples of personal protective equipment that some people use in their everyday lives. Personal protective equipment is made to do one thing, protect the person that's wearing it. To do that, you need to understand the hazards from which you need to be protected. You need to understand what types of PPE are available, what they can do, and what their limitations are. You need to understand how to select it, how to use it, how to care for it, and when it needs to be replaced. And many of us would benefit from having this basic knowledge before disaster strikes, because it's always harder to learn when you're in the middle of a crisis. Almost everyone can benefit from this knowledge, so take some time out to watch my course, Protecting Yourself with PPE, here on LinkedIn Learning.
