- In the traditional approach to planning a construction project, activities and durations are determined by a few people who create the project schedule. Trades are scheduled based on demand, that demand most often being nothing more than that schedule of activities. Performance is defined by a focus on optimizing each of those activities. Project control is executed through a system of monitoring results. In the lean theory of production, activities and durations are determined by the front line personnel who are empowered to make decisions and commitments. Activities are initiated based on the needs of the downstream process. Performance is defined by a focus on optimizing overall project throughput and minimizing waste at the project level. Project control is redefined from monitoring results to making things happen. Applying this theory to construction, what we're attempting to do with lean is create a reliable workflow.
