- Buildings are one of the top consumers when it comes to resources of our planet. During construction, a building consumes raw materials such as wood, gypsum board, sand, cement, stone, along with temporary energy and water to run equipment and tools. Once operational, energy and water is consumed everyday along with ongoing supplies such as paper and coffee. You are mistaken if you only think about raw material consumption when you think about a building's impact on resources. A building's resource consumption impacts the environment in multiple ways. The most obvious impact is the depletion of finite resources. Then there is waste and pollution of land, water bodies, and air as the results of burning fossil fuels and discarding what is of no longer use. Another impact that is not as obvious is the embodied energy. Have you ever heard of it? Embodied energy is the energy that goes into production of goods or services.
