- [Instructor] Let's review the different types of respiratory PPEs, starting with the ones that provide the lowest level of protection, and moving through to those that provide the highest level of protection. Let's start with surgical masks. And I want to make it clear that these masks, surgical masks are not considered respirators, but they are PPE. They can protect the wearer against the larger droplets I described earlier, and against sprays, or splashes of bodily fluids, but they don't provide adequate protection to filter out those smaller respirable particles that are aerosolized. They're loose, fitting and leakage will occur around the edges when a wearer inhales. One thing with these though, is that they do protect the patient, and other people from the wearer's respiratory droplet emission.
