- [Instructor] Sandwich components are composed of two laminated surfaces separated by core. Remember that core is that honeycomb shape and it's used for strengthening the composite. Now, when you're repairing a solid laminate the methods that you use is very different than when repairing core laminate. So, if you have damage to your core and it's, let's say smaller than half an inch, you can do something, use a filler or what's called potting to just pack it into the core. Now, one of the things you have to be careful of when you use a potting compound, it will restore some of the strength but it adds weight. So, the potting compound is heavier, you pack it into the core and it might affect the flight control balance depending on how much potting compound is used. Next, for larger repairs, the core can be spliced out and you can re-install new core into the void from where you took the original core out. So, for something…
