- [Instructor] Before we go any further looking at different types of schematics, we're going to go over a few of the common symbols that you might see in schematics. Remember, just like in blueprints, different designers use different variations of symbols, but for the most part, they're usually pretty visually similar. Take a look at some of these. Starting at the top, first we have disconnects. These are items that open and close circuits. We also have circuit interrupters, which are usually circuit breakers, they serve the same purpose. Pressure and vacuum switches. Liquid level switches. Temperature-actuated switches, or thermostats. You'll notice that all of these switches have an N.O or an N.C. That stands for normally open or normally closed. What that basically means is in the normal state of the circuit it may be open or it may be closed and it can be forced to do the opposite based on temperature, level or…
