Speeds and feeds

- Speed rate is the rate at which the tool or the part spins. If you're using a lathe, the workpiece is spinning. If you're using an end mill, the tool is spinning. Next, you have the feed rate, which is the rate at which the part moves relative to the tool. If I'm using the lathe, the tool holder is feeding the tool into the part as the part spins. Now, if I'm using an end mill the table and, or the tool will be moving, thus feeding the workpiece into the tool as it is being cut. When you go to start cutting you need to make sure you have several factors understood before you set your speeds and feeds. Size of the part. The type of materials you are dealing with, as in the cutter and the workpiece. Type of pass, are you making a rough cut pass or is it a finishing pass? Machine specifications, what speeds and feed rates does your machine effectively work at? The type of coolant you are using. The depth of cut. And even the direction of the cut you are taking are all factors that need…
