Many people know me from my online involvement in various industry communities, or from my participation in local organizations. But what surprise people that don't know me very well is that I'm actually an introvert, which means while I enjoy participating in these groups, I often need to make myself go to social industry events really just for my own good. These meetings and the contacts that you make at them have immense industry and oftentimes personal value. That is particularly true for the contacts that you make at these events, and not just the event itself. If all you do is attend an event without talking to some of the other individuals that are also there, you'll lose half the value of the event. Maybe the individuals inside of your own forum, or people at other firms, individuals at other office locations of your firm, or individuals online.
