Sustainable sites
- According to a United Nations study, around 60% of ecosystems services worldwide are currently degraded or used unsustainably. Developing land without mitigating its environmental impact results in deforestation, soil erosion, depleted and polluted water resources, extinction of species, and many more harmful effects on the natural systems that we all rely on for our survival. The Sustainable Sites category rewards sustainable site design strategies with an emphasis on restoring ecosystems around the project and preserving surrounding biodiversity. Let's review strategies that LEED credits reward and the key environmental issues each strategy addresses. Construction activity pollution prevention is a prerequisite under the Sustainable Sites category. Remember, LEED prerequisites are mandatory for all projects.
