- Here are a few terms regarding materials that you'll cut that you must understand in order to be effective as a machinist. A billet is basically a bar or plate stock that is used as a starting point. Remember, machining is a subtractive method of creating something. That means you start out with a billet that is slightly bigger than the final part and remove the excess material. Another starting point can be a forging. A forged part is a pre-formed shape made by hammering a heated billet. Castings, on the other hand, are melted metals or resins poured into a pre-defined form. These pre-formed shapes can help reduce machine time, as well as how much scrap you create. Swarf is the waste produced from the cutting action. Another term is chips. This is the scrap material that is removed from your workpiece. These are common names across all materials you are cutting, from wood to metal to plastic. Grain.
