- A building or interior space can pursue more than one LEED certification since LEED rating systems cover new construction, existing building operations and interior space retrofits. For example, a project that was certified as LEED core and shell may also be pursue LEED certification for operations and maintenance. This project may also have individual tenants that may certify their spaces under LEED for commercial interiors. Some LEED rating systems and their adaptations may have unique aspects. Let's take a look at what these are. LEED BD+C core and shell projects can be pre-certified, indicating their intent to LEED certify their building. As you can imagine, a core and shell building is usually looking for tenants to lease space. Using a precertification may therefore be a good marketing strategy.
