What are PBR materials?

- [Instructor] Physically based rendering, or physically based materials, is a method that attempts to render scenes in Unreal Engine in a manner that more accurately models real world lighting. It's this realistic behavior between lighting and surfaces that produces more natural appearing imagery, so let's take a look at how physically based materials exist within Unreal Engine. So you may have seen the acronym PBR, which actually means physically based rendering. This is something that is quite new in the game engine world, but it's not very new overall. It's been around, actually, for quite some time now, in the feature film and visual effects world. It is new in the game engine world because of recent advancements with hardware and development technology within game engines like Unreal Engine to allow us to take advantage of real world lighting and surfaces to get this more natural, realistic shading.
