What is climate change?

- [Instructor] According to NASA, climate change is a longterm change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth's local, regional, and global climates. Climate change is most commonly measured as the average increase in Earth's global surface temperature. Climate change is often used interchangeably with the term global warming, though these two terms are slightly different. Global warming results from human activities, while climate change includes both human produced and natural warming. NASA defines global warming as a longterm heating of Earth's climate system observed since the pre-industrial period due to human activities. This is primarily due to fossil fuel burning resulting in increasing greenhouse gas emissions that trap heat in Earth's atmosphere. We will cover greenhouse gases in an upcoming video.
