What are the skilled trades

(uplifting music) - No matter how hard I prepared for my career, I didn't know 1/10 of what I needed to know when I walked in the door the first time. And as I actually was in the world of work, I learned about all kinds of careers and opportunities I've never thought about before. Hi, I'm Allen Blue. I'm a Vice President of Product Management, and one of the co-founders of LinkedIn. There are lots of different ways in which people prepare for their careers. This is an opportunity to find out about apprenticeships, a way that you can learn and be paid at the same time. When we look out there into the field of people who are working in oil and energy, and people who are working in advanced manufacturing, and people who are working in construction, those are trades where when you start, you start by doing the work, and you move up over time into roles where you're managing a team, you're leading a squad, even can become an executive in that company. In order to prepare you for that, we're going to introduce you to the hard skills you're going to be learning and to the soft skills which are going to be essential for you to be successful. So that when you enter that apprenticeship program, or when you apply to your apprenticeship program, you already know what you're getting yourself into. And you've already got some of the skills which will allow you to proceed with confidence through that interview process and on into the training. As you go, you're going to meet people who've actually entered the skill trades who can tell you a lot about what their own experiences were, what you could expect, and what makes working in the skill trades so great.
