What are storyboards?

- Storyboards are the visual blueprint of a script. When you read a script and I read a script we both see different images in our head, but the only image that matters is the director's vision. A properly created storyboard shows the director's vision. Think of building a house. There are 86 steps in building a house, but without blueprints, it can't be built. Every vendor would have their own vision and construction would be a disaster. With storyboards, every crew member can see the director's vision and now everyone can work together towards the same common vision. And now with the latest softwares we can add timing and movement to our storyboards as we work creating animatics, and animatics are just basically video storyboards. Directors and the rest of the crew can see if the scenes and shots flow properly and you get a sense of timing and humor. Watching your storyboards run as a video also really helps make us better story artists. So with anywhere from 50 to over 500 crew members on a project, storyboards provide everyone with a visual blueprint that they can all work smoothly together towards to get to the director's vision.
