What you need to know

- Architecture, engineering, and construction, or AEC, encompasses many, many jobs and career paths. The information in this course is meant to introduce you to some of them. One of the biggest problems our industry faces is the organization and flow of information. This problem exists across all relationships in the industry. It exists between owner and designer, it exists between designer and constructor, and it really exists between all of the different entities that make up the construction team out there at the project site. At its most basic level, this is the biggest problem that technology can help us solve. If you have experience in the AEC world, you probably already know what I'm talking about. Owners make changes as the project takes shape because they realize plan facilities won't meet all their needs. Projects are over budget because they have constructibility issues. Rework occurs due to miscommunication of information, and scheduling delays occur because of poor communication between all parties involved. The entire process of design, procure, build, and handoff is inefficient and nonproductive all because there is so much information to accumulate, process, and distill that it's really difficult to do it efficiently using the processes that we've used for decades. Digital processes and technology solutions are made to help us with these issues. They're made to help us accumulate, process, and then share all of the information that all of the parties involved in the construction process need to do the job correctly the first time. If you're new to the industry, you might want to check out my course called "Construction Management Foundations," which discusses all of the different entities involved in this complex process, and it introduces you to how they all fit together. If you've been involved in any part of the AEC industry, you can probably already start to identify where existing processes break down. So let's start to explore these and look at where modern solutions can be adopted to improve the way we work.
