Wiring diagrams

- [Instructor] Let's talk about wiring diagrams. A wiring diagram is a picture or graphic of a device, apparatus or group of devices, and the wires are conductors that connect them all together, so that they may work correctly and as intended. Wiring diagrams are normally drawn up by the equipment manufacturer, and are used by the installer to be sure that they are putting the wires in the right spots. There are many types of wiring diagrams for many types of apparatus, and not all of them look the same. I'm going to show you a few common and basic ones that an electrician may come across when installing electrical devices. First, we will look at a wiring diagram for a ground-fault circuit interrupter receptacle, also known as a GFCI outlet. Take a look at this diagram, here's the backside of the GFCI outlet.
