- [Instructor] Perhaps one of the most proven ways to demonstrate your abilities, work ethic, and attitude is to gain entry level employment in the construction field. Many trades have entry level positions such as classified workers, material handlers, and support techs. These jobs are typically support roles keeping the contractor's work area stocked, organized, and running smoothly for the apprentices and the journey workers on site. Working in these roles provides many benefits. It allows you to try out the trade to see if it is a good fit for you. It looks great on a resume. It builds your knowledge of the tools, materials, and work environments. And, it allows you to get comfortable and familiar with working on a construction site. Treat these positions as a long job interview. Demonstrate a positive attitude, willingness to try new things, and punctuality. Request letters of recommendation from your supervisors to include in your portfolio.
