- [Instructor] The ZED or Z depth render element in V Ray assigns and then renders a grayscale value for every pixel found in a rendered image, based on an object's distance in the scene from the rendering camera. To take a look at how this shows up inside the V Ray frame buffer window, let's see inside the asset editor, add a ZED depth option to the render elements list and then take a render. Now the grayscale values that we see as we switch over to the ZED depth pass in the channel drop down and assigned at any kind of specific distances in the scene. But are in fact assigned according to where they sit in relation to the rendering camera and the farpoint setting on the render element itself, with the pixels at the rendering camera starting out as pure white, whilst the far point distance renders as pure black, no matter what the actual distance between those two points in senior units may be.
