An architect's point of view

- Going modular affects everyone on the AEC team. To be most effective, the discussion around modularizing pieces of a structure or a facility needs to take place very early in the design phase. The logistics of prefabricating components offsite and then transporting them for onsite assembly can impose new constraints and really have an impact on the architect. To get an architect's point of view on this concept, I spoke with Alison Rainey from Shepley Bulfinch architecture who worked as the designer for a lab building at Harvard University that was designed and built with the total modular concept in mind from day one. Here's what Alison had to say. - So, working with prefabrication or modular units has a great impact on what we do as designers. It actually sets up some constraints and as much as fun as it is to have zero constraints, it's also equally compelling to work within constraints because you understand sort…
