A different labor force
- The construction industry gets criticized quite often about our productivity. And it's common to hear non-industry people compare construction productivity to manufacturing productivity. One of the issues I always have with that comparison is that while manufacturing has been able to adopt entirely different approaches to creating products, such as assembly line production, we have really stayed stuck in the craft method of production due to the nature of our work. Constructing a new facility is basically producing a one-off product. Each one is unique and we do it with skilled tradespeople how are experts at one trade or craft. When we move work off site and into a manufacturing environment, we have the opportunity to change that. We don't have to use workers who are skilled at just one trade and we can take advantage of some assembly line production techniques and automation tools. Some say that this…
