The dimensions of BIM

- [Instructor] Part of the BIM management process is understanding the various dimensions of BIM. The first dimension is called 3D, D indicating dimension. 3D means that it's a three-dimensional structure, so it has length, height, width, with different lengths associated with it. That means that BIM is usually a 3D model. The next D is considered 4D, which is normally associated with construction sequencing. Construction sequencing is adding the phase of time to this building information modeling process. So you can show the building going from just the site to the construction of the building to the management of the facility to eventually renovations and the ultimate demolition of that building, each being a different phase of time. That's 4D. 5D is adding cost to this process. So you can add cost, may that be material cost, labor cost, or any other cost, to the process of building a facility and maintaining the facility over its life cycle.
