The history of USGBC, GBCI, and LEED

- Leadership in energy and environmental design, commonly known as LEED, is a green building rating system that evaluates and recognizes the environmental performance of a building. LEED provides a framework to help building professionals create efficient, healthy, and comfortable buildings with significant economic, social, and environmental benefits. US Green Building Council is a non-profit organization that created the LEED rating system. Today, USGBC focuses on the advancement of LEED rating systems, green building education, and advocacy for green buildings for everyone within this generation. The first version of LEED was finalized and adopted by the USGBC in 1998. LEED as we know it was unveiled in 2000 with 69 total available points and four certification levels.
