An introduction to BIM

- [Instructor] Before we can discuss a career in building information modeling, we first need to understand what a building information model is. A building information model is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility. In many cases, that's a 3D representation of a building, but in other cases, it can just be a database of information which ties back to the different components that are associated with a facility. A BIM, that's that information or the model, is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life cycle. The life cycle of a structure can be defined as existing from the earliest conception of what this facility will be to the demolition of this structure or of the site. So a career in building information modeling is a career related to the formation of this building information model, the creation of the information, and the storage and managing of the information associated with a BIM.
