The role of the built environment

- We all occupy physical space, whether it's our home, our place of work, where we study, meet with friends, our environment affects us on so many levels. Our mood, our health, and our productivity. And many other aspects of our individual life experience are in direct correlation with the quality of our built environment. As groups and communities, we are also affected by the buildings and spaces we occupy on a larger scale. The role of the built environment on the health and well-being of people, the operations of companies, and the success of entire economies, and then the cultural and social welfare of the public, is vast. An entire course could be written just on that. Typically, projects fall under the following broad categories, residential, commercial, and industrial. Commercial project types cover a wide variety of projects, including office and education, and basically anything outside of residential. While industrial projects are not as common and include projects like power plants or factories. Industrial projects are often interchangeable with commercial projects, but are not as common, so we won't be focusing on those here. There is also a distinction between public and private sectors. Public projects are commissioned and constructed by city, state, and the federal government, and often follow special procurement procedures and might have design standards of their own. While private projects are constructed by private individuals and organizations, and are often subject to less formalities. Some examples of public projects include courthouses, bridges, parks, and libraries, just to name a few. In this course I wanted to highlight the following building types, residential, office and business, education, healthcare, and retail and entertainment. In the following sections we will discuss each of these types in greater detail. So let's do this.
