- If you've processed the same raw image in different raw conversion applications or even noticed the difference between your camera's JPEGs and what you get out of your raw converter, then you've seen how there's nothing objective about raw conversion. There's no absolute, correct way to process a raw file. Different companies have different approaches and different ideas about what makes a good result. Aside from the aesthetic choices that engineers make when coding raw conversion software, there's also simple technological ability at play. As time goes by, engineers are getting better and more sophisticated in their ability to process raw data. For example, noise reduction algorithms have been improved a lot over the years, as have highlight recovery processes. What that means is that you can take old raw files, run them through a current raw converter and possibly get much better results than you could when you originally shot the image.
