Understanding in-camera JPEG conversions

- Some cameras are now starting to include commands that allow you to convert a raw file on your camera's media card to a JPEG in camera. Obviously, the camera knows how to convert from raw to JPEG. It does so every time you shoot a JPEG image. Having such a command though means you can shoot in raw but still get JPEGs out of the camera if you need them. However, working through the interface to do this can be a little slow. So it's not necessarily a good substitute for simply shooting raw plus JPEG. I have found this feature useful for one particular workflow situation though. And that's when I'm traveling without a computer, and I'm relying on my phone or iPad for post-production. Like many cameras today, this camera can transfer images to those devices via Wi-Fi. However, that transferability only works with JPEG files. So if I want to move an image from my camera to my phone or iPad for editing, I first have to use the camera's built-in JPEG conversion. Then I can send that…
