- Now, we've talked about a lot of benefits when it comes to using a prime lens, but I think it's important to talk about some of the aesthetic reasons to use this; it really is a conscious choice that you need to make, as a photographer or a director of photography. And Jim, of course, I think we've already really nailed the benefit of the shallow depth of field, that's one aesthetic choice, but it opens up all sorts of other choices. For example, I love sometimes being able to use a macro lens stopped down to F-22 so it's really tiny, so I can do things like longer exposure, if I don't have a variable ND filter with me, or the ability to get really long starbursts if shooting a photo of nighttime and I've got street lights, or other lights and I want those to become elongated, sometimes having those smaller aperture controls are really nice and the prime lenses work well.
