- If you're shooting in one of the automatic or semi-automatic modes on your camera, odds are, the camera's going to get the metering pretty good if not perfect most of the time. But there are going to be those occasions where the camera just doesn't quite get it and you need to have a little intervention, and take over a little bit. The situation where this might happen is one where there's a huge discrepancy between the foreground and the background as far as exposure goes. An easy example for this is a backlit subject. Let's say you're taking a picture of a person in front of a window. The person is indoors, the window, of course, is showing the outdoors. The person indoors is quite dark compared to the scene outside. In that case, the camera might get a little bit confused and not really be sure where it should balance the exposure. In a situation like this, you have a feature called auto exposure lock. And you're gonna find this on pretty much any DSLR or mirrorless camera. Auto…
