In a previous movie I mentioned that one of the advantages of working with a prime lens is that it allows you capture a really shallow depth of field and this can add some magic to your portraits. In this movie I want to dig deeper into that topic. Here the most common prime focal length for working with portraiture is the 85. Another common focal length is the 50. And here you can see I have two options of these focal lengths. On this side over here, I have some options which are more affordable. These cost approximately a few $100. Over here I have a few lenses which cost over $1,000. And I want to talk about the differences between the two. And at this point I want to take off my teacher hat. And I want to put on the hat of a friend. Because often I have my friends ask me, Chris, is it worthwhile to work with something like this? Can I capture good photographs with these lenses?
