Working with vintage primes

- When it comes to vintage primes, there's really two reasons that people choose to shoot on them. One is because they already own them, and they just want to simply put them into use, and this is a great reason, because it's a way to extend the value. Another reason, though, is sometimes an aesthetic choice. Jim, you recently worked on a production where the director of photography decided to go vintage. What was the decision process like? - The choice was made to use vintage primes that had a softer feel to them. They were Cooke primes, that's an English manufacturer, and they were the S2 series, which is a couple of decades removed from the modern S4s. And so, they were paired and matched for their softness, and then we actually had to augment our more modern lenses, like zooms, and things that we added to the production to have an extended range, with softening diffusion filters to match these older vintage lenses. - And folks like Tiffen and others make those, that actually can…
