Pro tips for recording success

- [Narrator] Here are a few ideas to improve the quality of your creation, save time, and minimize hassle. The first link in a quality audio chain is the microphone. Get a quality microphone and learn how to use it. We'll explore this more in a separate video. Do your best to find or create a quiet, low-reverb recording space. Minimize ambient noise as best you can. And of course, let the people in your world know that you'll be recording. I like to use an account that is just for recording. I have a simple desktop, turn off all my notifications, and just focus on the content. I also close out everything that is not part of my presentation. This removes distractions and frees up my laptop's processing power. On the flip side of that, I like to get everything ready before I record. I fire up my apps, open browser windows. Anything that will be in my recording is ready to go before I hit the big red button. I almost always use a script of some sort. Even just a few bullet points helps keep my delivery concise and focused on the topic. I like to have my script open on a second monitor. But if that's not an option, a second device like a laptop or even low-tech paper works just dandy. Before every session, I run through my record settings and make sure they're set up correctly for my project. Nothing is more frustrating than nailing a perfect take only to discover I forgot to enable my microphone. If you mess up and you know it, clap your hands. Anytime I botch you a line or an onscreen action, I let go of the mouse, clap three times, and give that section another try. The three waveform spikes give me an easy-to-see editing cue and I can just lop out the mistake in post-production. Remember, Camtasia is an editing program. You can work in bite-sized chunks with as many sections and layers as you need. Just create one piece at a time. Then string it all together. Keep your final project in mind but build one block at a time. No one needs to know what happens behind the scenes. This is the magic of editing. The only thing your viewers are going to see is your final video.
