Trimming with a magnetic track - Camtasia Tutorial

- [Narrator] Now let's handle the two mistakes in the middle of our movie. Now to help you see where the edit points are, I've added some clip markers to this project which you can see as these small triangles. To see the marker labels, click the small chevron here on the timeline. We'll talk more about markers in a later movie. Even without the markers, the mistakes are pretty easy to see by simply looking at the audio waveform. There's these small gaps in the waveform, right here and right here. And then the last chapter of this course watch the movie on handling mistakes to learn more about this recording technique which makes editing your footage really easy. Let's zoom into the clip by pressing Command+Shift+= or Control+Shift+= a few times so we get a better view of our edit. Then jump your playhead down here to edit one and then press the spacebar to preview this section of the clip. It looks like you're on the right path to some great roosted. It looks like you're on the right path to some great home roasted coffee. And the mistake is right here and then there's this silent gap, and then the rephrase which goes back all the way to right around where edit one is at. Now this rephrase technique makes this edit really easy to make. Just jump your playhead down to right before the rephrase comes in. Then, if you remember from the last movie, you can only make a trim edit at the end of a clip. So with your playhead right here, split the clip by clicking the split clip icon here in your toolbar, or press Command+T on the Mac or S on Windows. And your single clip is now two separate clips. Select the incoming clip, move your mouse over the gap and get the double headed arrow and then start making your trim all the way back to your edit point. This works for getting rid of the footage but notice that we have that gap that's left in our timeline that we would have to close by selecting the downstream clip and dragging it up. Now that's not bad but here's a cool trick. Let's undo this edit by pressing Command or Control+Z a couple of times, and then let's turn on a new feature in Camtasia 2020. The magnetic track icon by clicking the magnet icon here at the head of the track. The magnet flips over and it points towards the clip, letting you know that this track is now magnetic. And it will automatically close any gaps that are created during an edit for any clips on this one single track that it's enabled for. And this is a great feature for single track editing. Now, let's make that same trim edit again, make sure the incoming clip is still selected, move your mouse over the end of the clip to get your double headed arrow and now as you trim back, the downstream clip automatically follows your edit with you. We can back up our playhead, press the spacebar and we can preview our edit. Profile, it looks like you're on the right path to some great home roasted coffee. And that sounds great. Okay, let's take care of that other mistake. Scrub your timeline down until you can see edit to and then jump your playhead right to that location. Play through this whole section on your own to hear what it sounds like and pay particular attention to the actions that's taking place on the canvas as you listen to the dialogue. The mistake happens just as we would expect, right here in front of the mistake gap that was left. We have our original audio and we have our rephrased content. However, if you start scrubbing your playhead overtop of the original dialogue, and you watch the canvas, you can see that we have some mouse movements that are going on here in our dialog. Until about right here, then the mouse cursor stops moving at that point. So from here until the mistake is where you would want to make your edit. If you look at the audio waveform, you can see there's this natural gap in the phrasing. You would want to find the corresponding natural gap in the rephrase which is down here. So let's make our edit. Move your playhead right to the location just in front of where the audio comes in for the natural gap, and then split the clip with Command+T or the S key. This time select the downstream clip, move your mouse over the end to get your double headed arrow and then make your trim edit. Now the downstream clip is being compressed underneath of that edit. Go all the way down until you get to the cutback in marker that I left. And remember trim edits are non-destructive, so you can make fine tuned adjustments if you need to after your edit. So don't worry about getting your edit perfect on the first try. All right back your playhead up to just in front of edit two and let's play over edit. Then, if you stretch out the time between first crack and second crack, you greatly improved the sweetness, fruit and chocolate flavors of the final roast. That looks and sounds great. But making that edit you were able to preserve the actions on screen and improve the clarity of the dialogue with a single edit. Whenever you complete the editing of a movie, go back and watch the entire movie all the way through to make sure that you're happy with all your edits. Make adjustments if you need to.
