Getting into the what before you define the how will continue to help you shape your instruction. The most effective tool to guide you in determining the what is backward design. This approach forces you to align with the what you want your students to know and the accompanying evidence in assessment form before you get into all the instructional content. So let's take our case study here. We are creating an online dog training program. What are the desired results of this program? While we have the lesson or module-level learning objectives, we want to first focus on the overall learning goal of the training, which is to provide applicable instruction on dog training principles and have them effectively practiced so adopted dogs will successfully transition into their new homes.
