- [Instructor] It's important that we understand encryption for the SCOR exam which falls into two main categories, symmetric encryption and asymmetric encryption. Before we look at these categories, let's discuss why encryption is important. One of the most foundational concepts regarding security is known as the CIA triad. This initialism stands for the three very important pillars of security which are confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Every organization has what's known as assets that need to be protected. And an asset is simply anything that is valuable to an organization. This can include equipment, trade secrets, database information, accounting information or any number of other things. Let's zero in on confidentiality for the moment because one of the main ways that we assure confidentiality is through the use of encryption.
