- [Presenter] Storm control is another layer to security feature found in our Cisco catalyst switches. A traffic storm occurs when we have packets flooding the local area network in an excessive manner and that causes the degradation of our network performance. This can be a unicast storm, a multicast storm or most typically what comes to mind is a broadcast storm. That's what we commonly think of when we talk about traffic storms. The storm control feature monitors incoming traffic in one second intervals and it compares that to the acceptable traffic storm levels that we configure. When we designate an acceptable level, we can do that in bits per second or BPS, we can do that in packets per second or PPS or we can use a percentage of the interface bandwidth. Storm control uses threshold values to determine when a storm is taking place. We have what's called a rising threshold and a falling threshold.
