- One particularly effective method to both engage students with content and encourage them to learn content is to ask them to summarize information presented in class or a workshop. The process of thinking about content and summarizing the content can be helpful and facilitate learning. Here are several exercises for summarizing content in an instructional setting. One important and often overlooked step in teaching learners to summarize content is to actually build summary time into the instruction. It's tempting to try to cover as much material as possible, given limited instructional time, but it's far better from a learning perspective to have summary time rather than race through the content. Learning happens during reflection and summarization. One activity I use is called what have I learned so far. In this technique, I divide students into pairs of two and ask them to take one minute and summarize what we've just covered. Then I ask them to take two or three minutes to share…
