Summer sunshine and a wide tonal range

- So with a burst of leaves growing on the trees, the bright sunshine high in the sky, comes all the fantastic colors of summer. With the fabulous intensity of the summer light comes a higher contrast and clearer definition between the shapes. Also, the shadows will have a harder edge. And all the light that's bouncing around on the ground will bounce into the shadows and fills them with color. With our summer painting we can incorporate all of the brush handling techniques we've looked at so far. We can use the filbert brush for blending in smooth skies and clouds, paint thicker impasto marks for areas of brightly lit foliage, and enhance the shadows with colorful glazes. When we move the tonal strip into the summer shadows, you can just see how dark they are. So we've still got some lighter tint in the sky, but summer will give you the widest tonal range. And the range varies throughout the entire of the scene. So it can be a really fantastic season for really pushing all those…
