(melancholy piano music) - [Voiceover] So we'll begin with our first color mixing tutorial, and the aim of this lesson is to mix color strings to match the values in the scene. And a color string is a group of premixed piles of paint with different tonal values, and they usually start with the darkest color in the string and then slowly by adding lighter steps into the mixture. And when you premix the colors first, before starting your painting, it will also highlight the other important factor in creating a realistic winter scene, and that's working within the compressed tonal range. The base pigments are a limited palette of warm and cool colors, burnt umber, titanium white, yellow ochre, and ultramarine blue. So here I've got some burnt umber, which is a nice warm brown. And my opposite to that, as in my cool, is a ultramarine blue. I've also got some yellow ochre, which is a nice warm yellow color, which is going to give us some of those really lovely dull greens that you often…
